Hydrothermal Carbonisation (HTC)

Project title

Hydrothermal Carbonisation (HTC) - Theoretical evaluation of selected schemes for municipal sludge treatment

Project initiator

TerraNova Energy GmbH

Project volume

55.000 €

Project start

01.10.2012

Duration

6 months

Description

The project aims at evaluating the relevance of the Hydrothermal Carbonisation (HTC) technology for the handling of sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants. HTC treatment produces biochar that is potentially a good supplement to lignite in power plants. Based on data available in the literature and provided by the company Terra Nova, it will assess handling schemes including the HTC
technology in comparison with conventional sludge treatment schemes, with a focus on the overall energy balance of the treatment options. This study is thought to identify most promising HTC-based handling schemes for municipal sludge treatment.
