Bank filtration is a proven, nature based method of water extraction and treatment that has been used in Berlin and other European cities for over 100 years. Surface water is pumped to a nearby well for infiltration, usually in the bank area. Bank filtration is the main barrier against microbial contamination for water supplies without disinfection technologies in the treatment process. It also improves the chemical water quality and balances physico-chemical properties.
Our targeted measurement campaigns investigate the retention of microorganisms, and determine the residence time between the water and the well using environmental tracers. This information is used for risk assessment and for developing suitable adaptation measures. In addition to bank filtration, we also specialise in other nature based solutions, such as soil aquifer treatment or groundwater recharge.
